Chapter 19

Mia was backed up against the hood of her car. Ron was so close to her she could feel the heat emanating from his body. There was a hell of a lot of energy coming out of this hundred-and-fifty-year-old retired werewolf. But Ron’s reputation didn’t involve only his physical power but also his ability to control and influence his wolves.

He lived up to his reputation. He was so close to shifting and letting his anger get the better of him, but he refrained. In a short time, he had composed himself.

“You accused me of hurting Aubree. You must have some kind of evidence?”

Mia straightened herself up. “You’ve been retired for a long time. I’m guessing you don’t have access to technology and data resources.”

“Even when I was in charge, I didn’t endorse technology. We have a long lifespan, but I refuse to invest a second of my life in nonsensical information and practices. Aubree was the only human I loved. So much that I married her. Why would I want to hurt her?”

“I came here to ask you that very question.”

“Is she all right?”

“For now, yes. But it seems as if something from the past has come up. She and her son received a death threat. I helped with the investigation, and that was when I came across the information about the Lilipearl. If someone like me can get that information, then the whole world out there can get it, too.”

“I didn’t do it. On the contrary, I gave her access to all my available resources. Anything that could help us have children. But I did think that Aubree couldn’t bear a werewolf child because of the difference in our species. After we divorced, however, I had several mates. And I figured out it was me who couldn’t have offspring.”

“If your mates kept taking Lilipearl, not only would they be affected, you would too. In a while, it would prevent you from having children or cause you to have deadliners. I’m not sure which is worse.”

“There’s nothing wrong with being a deadliner, Mia.”

“You wouldn’t say that if you were rejected by your own family.”

“Your family is wrong. Life is a miracle. If they can’t see that, they don’t deserve you.”

He came closer. “You came to ask me if I gave Lilipearl to Aubree. The answer is no. I loved her. Did she have a family? Is she happy?”

Mia nodded. “You let her go with a clean slate. She married a doctor and had a son, who is now a police detective. I’d say she is very contented with her life.”

“And you, are you happy with your life out there with the humans?”

“So far, so good.”

He nodded. “Is there anything else I can help you with?”

“If you didn’t poison Aubree, someone else did. Don’t you want to find out?”

“I’m an old lone wolf now. What can I do? You should leave now, Mia.”

“All right.” She turned and walked toward the driver’s side door.

“When I say leave, I mean it. Don’t go to the clan and stir up trouble.
